Yet Another Koreans/Racism Article

This time it's in Foreign Policy. There's nothing new or particularly insightful here, still, it's interesting to read another "outsider's" view of Koreans and racism. Both the maligned Bucheon bus riding professor and Superbowl MVP/Korean hero Hines Ward are mentioned.

I found this part of the article to be the most noteworthy (quoting Ward's mother, who is Korean):

"Kim described in stark terms the discrimination she experienced before she immigrated to the United States. "What do you think would have become of us if I had kept living here with Hines? He would probably never have been able to be anything but a beggar. Do you think I would even have been able to get work cleaning houses?" she said while visiting the Pearl S. Buck Foundation in Seoul. "Koreans of the same skin color are even more racist among themselves. It doesn't make sense. If everybody hates our children so much because their skin is a different color, then why do Koreans run around dying their hair blond and red?""

I understand the draw to your writings. I come from the other perspective of Korean people as an African-Native American man. Koreans have presented themselves to me as hateful, isolated people. Until a few years ago I would never do business with Koreans because they carry their contempt for dark skinned people on their clothes, and flaunt their adoration of white Americans. The Chinese carry themselves the same, and I never eat the food of anyone who despises me.

That being said holding myself away from Koreans exhausted me, and I decided to alter my own perception of Koreans to alter any possible relationships that may develop during my exercise. It works on a small scale. In ten years there are only two Korean business owners I have befriended. My wife, on the other hand, shops in the Korean marketplace in Northeast Washington DC. They have great rapport, but both of us are sensitive to the odor Koreans smell when they see dark people. I have become pensive instead of angry at the reception Koreans typically show my dark skin. It is my choice. I choose to be in this discussion.

The fact you are advancing a thought reconstruct is a hopeful thing, and in response I plan to react thoughtfully, and positively.

These are my words. I am Gregory E. Woods, Dawn Wolf, Keeper of Stories
